LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday urged all beneficiaries of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), including ministers and advisers, to resign from their offices as soon as possible, a private TV channel reported.

Addressing a press conference in Rahim Yar Khan, the PML-N chief said the government’s current policies could be harmful, but democracy could not be derailed in the country.

Weaken: He said the Supreme Court’s verdict on the NRO had not yet been implemented and the government’s delay could weaken the democratic set-up in the country. However, he said that no dictator would be allowed to derail the current set-up. He said the government had made a mistake by triggering the price hike, adding that no political party, including the PML-N, had been consulted on the matter.

Nawaz said there was no reason for increasing the rates of electricity, gas and petrol, as the people of Pakistan were already suffering from tough economic policies.

The PML-N chief said his decision to not contest by-polls from NA-123 was not a result of any foreign agreement. Commenting on the recent killings in Karachi, he said the culprits should be arrested and stern action should be taken against them. To a query about the prevailing law and order situation in the country, Nawaz said Pakistan needed a multi-pronged strategy to deal with militancy and extremism.
